Drawing together voices from across the African continent, Christopher Moller Gallery’s presentation reflects its longstanding commitment to a broader Pan-African dialogue within contemporary art. The exhibition brings together artists shaped by differing histories, cultural traditions, and lived realities, offering multiple perspectives on the emotional and social shifts defining contemporary life across Africa today.

Christopher Moller Gallery’s response to this year’s HEAT Festival theme focuses less on spectacle and more on quieter, deeply resonant human experiences. Set within the intimate environment of the gallery, the exhibition encourages a slower and more reflective engagement with contemporary African art — one centred on atmosphere, storytelling, materiality, and human connection.

Control + Z brings together artists whose practices explore the growing tension between modern consumer culture and the enduring human need for connection, memory, nature, and lived experience. In an age shaped by acceleration, overstimulation, and consumption, the exhibition asks what values, rituals, and relationships remain worth carrying forward.

Through painting, mixed media, and material experimentation, the participating artists reflect on themes of heritage, spirituality, identity, family structures, urbanisation, and humanity’s evolving relationship with the natural world. Rather than proposing a nostalgic return to the past, the exhibition considers the possibility of balance — questioning how tradition and modernity might coexist within a rapidly shifting world.

At its core, Control + Z invites viewers to slow down and reflect on what it means to remain human within an increasingly accelerated age.
