As She is

The Bold Beauty Project began as an international movement dedicated to challenging perceptions of disability and redefining conventional ideas of beauty through powerful photographic portraiture. Originating in the United States, the project has grown into a global platform that celebrates women living with physical disabilities while advocating for greater visibility, inclusion, and representation.

For the Western Cape Chapter, 33BREE, in collaboration with The Artists Gallery, has brought together a collective of Western Cape photographers and women from diverse backgrounds to create a uniquely South African interpretation of this important initiative. Realised through the generous contribution of participating photographers, models, and the gallery, the project is presented as a community-driven, non-profit endeavour dedicated to meaningful social impact.

Titled As She Is, the exhibition presents a series of intimate photographic portraits that invite viewers to encounter each woman beyond assumptions, stereotypes, and labels. Through a refined visual language of soft light, thoughtful composition, and timeless styling, the work shifts attention away from disability as a defining characteristic and towards the individual herself, her presence, identity, dignity, and humanity.

The photographs do not seek to tell stories of limitation, struggle, or triumph. Instead, they create space for something far more profound: recognition. Each portrait asks us to pause and engage with the person before us, not through the lens of difference, but through a shared human experience.

In a society where disability is often overlooked or misrepresented, As She Is offers an alternative narrative. It celebrates visibility without spectacle, beauty without qualification, and strength without performance. Disability remains visible where naturally present, neither concealed nor exaggerated, but integrated into the portrait as one aspect of a multifaceted life.

Presented during Women’s Month and within the context of the HEAT Festival, this exhibition serves as both a celebration and a call for reflection. It challenges audiences to reconsider ingrained perceptions of beauty, capability, and belonging while honouring the women whose portraits invite us into their world.

Ultimately, As She Is is about being comfortable with who you are—about our disability, owned rather than hidden. It is about presence, seeing, and perhaps seeing more clearly than before.
