Synthetic By Nature
genre / Digital Arttime: 15:00 to 16:00
venue: Iziko Planetarium & Digital Dome
Presented within the immersive environment of the digital dome, this programme explores the evolving relationship between technology and nature. Originally developed to extend human vision beyond the limits of the eye, dome technologies allow us to look deeper into the sky, the universe and the hidden structures of the world around us. The artists in this programme each engage with this expanded field of perception in distinct ways.
In Entangled Structure, Austrian artist Marion Essl creates digital forms that appear to ebb and flow under the influence of natural forces. Meanwhile, South Korean artist Jiha Jeon’s Fixing the Rare: Breeder A imagines a future in which technology becomes a means of controlling nature, preserving life and resisting disappearance. French artist and filmmaker Lydia Yakonowsky’s La méthode des moments borrows the language of the statistical “method of moments,” transforming graphs and numerical forms into a poetic meditation on the cycles of life, the passage of time and the pull of nostalgia.
Together, these immersive works question whether digital technologies simply reveal the natural world—or whether they also reshape our desire to master, preserve and connect with it.
