Gauteng (for Ebenhaezer)

Gauteng (for Ebenhaezer) is a poetic theatre work that brings South Africa’s cities to life as a fractured family through spoken word, live music and satire. Gauteng and Kaapstad, once lovers, leave behind their “children”—Hillbrow, Yeoville, Maboneng, Sandton and Msawawa—whose lives reflect the trauma, memory and resilience woven into the country’s urban landscape.

As the family falls apart, Hillbrow spirals into addiction, Yeoville dies, Maboneng is poisoned and Sandton turns his back on those closest to him. At home, the youngest, Msawawa, neglects his cousin Eskom, deepening the family’s descent into darkness. Years later, Newtown returns to gather the pieces.

Performed with minimal staging, a single crate, live music and dynamic physicality, the production moves effortlessly between humour, satire and heartbreak. Gauteng (for Ebenhaezer) is both a love letter and an elegy—a meditation on loss, survival and creative endurance that invites audiences to experience a city’s pulse, its fractures and its enduring capacity for song, memory and connection.
